Overview

Personal, Social, Health, Economic and Citizenship education enables students to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, prepare for life and work in modern Britain and play a full and active part in society as responsible citizens.

Our programme of study for PSHE and Citizenship education aims to develop skills and attributes such as resilienceself-esteemrisk-managementteam working and critical thinking.

Core themes are explored in a number of ways:

  1. Through timetabled lessons delivered by PSHE subject teachers.
  2. Embedded into delivery across curriculum subjects
  3. As part of our assembly schedule

Key Stage 1 and 2

In Key Stage 1 and 2 our intention is to promote personal, social and economic development, as well as their health and wellbeing. It helps to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active, responsible citizens.

At West Kirby School and College, children’s wellbeing, happiness and safety are our first priority, and PSHE is the key vehicle through which we share this with children. We regard PSHE as an important, integral component of the whole curriculum; it is central to our approach and at the core of our ethos.

Our PSHE curriculum is broad and balanced, ensuring that it:

  • Promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our children and of society
  • Prepares our children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they already face and for the next stage of education
  • Provides information about keeping healthy and safe, emotionally and physically
  • Encourages our children to understand how all actions have consequences and how they can make informed choices to help themselves, others and the environment.

PHSE is taught in a cross curricular way through our Learning Means the World curriculum.

Key Stage 3, 4 and 5

Our intent in Key Stages 3 and 4 is to provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community.

Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of West Kirby School and local communities. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning.

Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. They learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

PSHE will support the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to:

  • Have a sense of purpose
  • Value self and others
  • Form relationships
  • Make and act on informed decisions
  • Communicate effectively
  • Work with others
  • Respond to challenge
  • Be an active partner in their own learning
  • Be active citizens within the local community
  • Explore issues related to living in a democracy
