Meet The Pastoral Care and Trauma Support Teams

Mr. Horne, Mr Davies, Miss. Killey, Mr. Brown and Miss. Roberts make up the Pastoral Care Team

What is Pastoral Care?

Broadly, it is to ensure the physical and emotional welfare of your child; our school will undertake a series of initiatives to safeguard your child and to promote your child’s wellbeing, but it does not end there…

At West Kirby School and College, our Pastoral Care Team support our pupil’s physical, social and emotional welfare, building positive relationships that allow us to identify and support behaviours which impact on a pupils ability to access learning. In turn, supporting the pupils to be able to self-regulate in the difficult situations life can present.

Miss. Killey & Mr. Brown are adept at building relationships with young people, building on existing interests to form positive relationships that allow us to encourage and develop new and existing skills. As a team we create a calm and caring environment where young people are encouraged and supported to undertake challenges within both academic and social situations.

We promote an Attachment and Trauma Sensitive approach through the Trauma Support Team. Our staff, Mr. Davies and Miss. Franklin are trained in supporting Attachment and Trauma difficulties, this allows them to empower and help our young people in developing emotional regulation, well-being and resilience through specific programmes and interventions. They are also qualified to train our staff in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention.

In October we were awarded Attachment & Trauma Sensitive Schools Award - Bronze level (ATSSA). The award is external recognition of the commitment of our staff and the work they do to develop a culture of compassion and nurture. This plays a key role in getting children and young people into a state of 'learning readiness'. Above all, the school is committed to embracing inclusion at it's best, successfully removing barriers to learning and participation in the school. Read more here

Within the PCT, staff are specialists in Positive Behaviour Support, Diffusion and De-escalation and Risk Assessments. Led by Miss Roberts, they work with the education staff and provide valuable support for the wellbeing and safety our pupils; also providing specialist regular internal staff training staff across the school.

Our teams pride themselves on the success of the interventions undertaken, helping the pupils to enjoy, develop and be successful during their time spent at West Kirby School and College.
