Preparation for Adulthood

Rationale and Delivery within West Kirby School and College

Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) is a syllabus, designed to help pupils in our school, develop the necessary skills, knowledge, and self-confidence to lead as independent lives as possible. It centres on improving the life chances of all who attend our school, by preparing them across four key areas:

  • Employment: Preparing young people for their futures in work, higher education, or specific training pathways.
  • Independent Living: Having the skills necessary to live as independently as possible, as independent living varies with each individual.
  • Health: Managing their physical and mental health requirements throughout
  • their adulthood.
  • Community Inclusion: Being part of a community, understanding friendships and relationships and connecting with people and organisations in their local area

Our Preparation for Adulthood programme will help to:

  • Improves Life Outcomes: By delivering this, we expect that it will lead to a better overall quality of life and create more opportunities for individuals in their future.
  • Fostering Aspirations: Encouraging young people to consider a wide range of futures and promote ambitions for their future.

How Preparation for Adulthood is delivered across school
Mr Stephen Davey is responsible for the syllabus and schemes of work for delivery to all pupils in Key Stage Three and Four and Ms. Nicole Comber is responsible for the syllabus and schemes of work for delivery to Post 16.

All students have one lesson each week and the syllabus has been designed to sequence over each year, building on prior knowledge learnt each year. There is a collaborative approach to delivering PfA, which requires team effort,
which involves the pupils, parents/carers and other organisations.

Ultimately, PfA is designed to ensure that no pupil finishes their education at West Kirby School without the essential skills to traverse adulthood successfully.
