West Kirby School Graded 'Outstanding' in recent Ofsted inspection

West Kirby School and College are incredibly proud of our Ofsted 'Outstanding' grading in recent inspection.

West Kirby School and College, described as a place where ‘pupils have the best possible chance to succeed’, has been rated 'Outstanding' following a recent Ofsted inspection. 

We pride ourselves on successfully supporting pupils from across Wirral and beyond, with a range of special educational needs. West Kirby School and College has received multiple awards in recognition of their outstanding support for pupils. These include: Autism Accreditation from National Autistic Society; ADHD Friendly School Award; Attachment and Trauma Sensitive Schools Award; Leading Parent Partnership Award and the Wellbeing Award. 

Ofsted emphasised ‘pupils feel safe', that the school has ‘high ambitions for every pupil' and recognised that ‘much thought has been given to a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum. Read more about what Ofsted said...

Miss Thomas, School Principal, said “I am really proud of our exceptional staff who worked unfailingly both before and during the pandemic. They have ensured the school has developed and excelled in meeting the needs of our fantastic children and young people. Also, huge thanks to our cohort of parents and carers who work with and support us on a daily basis, like our stakeholders their help is invaluable.” 

Mr Peacock, Parent Governor commented “It is great news to hear that we again achieved outstanding following an Ofsted inspection. It is a credit to all staff and pupils and reflects the ongoing drive for excellence within the school.”

Following the inspection report, John Edwards, Interim Chief Executive, Education and Skills Funding Agency, wrote “You have created an environment where your learners flourish, and make significant progress towards their life goals and preparation for adulthood.”

West Kirby School and College are proud to be judged ‘Outstanding’ across all categories of the Ofsted framework and such was the success of the visit, there were no recommendations for improvement.

  • Staff are proud to work in the school and enjoy their work. They feel exceptionally well-supported to do their job. 
  • Pupils feel safe because they know staff will listen. Pupils can relax and enjoy their time at school. 
  • Pupils are taught to respect everyone and are sensitive to feelings of others
  • Pupils are able to develop resilience and the ability to keep themselves safe in school, in the community and online.
  • Bullying is extremely rare
  • Leaders have given much thought to developing a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum; thought very carefully about the strengths and interests of pupils; they offer courses and subjects suit pupils well. They have introduced Animal Husbandry and BTEC Sports Science.
  • Curriculum leaders have excellent knowledge of their subject
  • Leaders have prioritised reading, They have developed reading areas and libraries; invested into a wide range of books, carefully considering pupil's interests. 
  • Pupils study the national curriculum up Year 9 and options for older pupils are reviewed each year to make sure they suit their interests and abilities, for example Classics, Photography, 3D Art.
  • Many pupils arrive after a period of disrupted education and staff get them back on track. Leaders and staff help pupils manage their own behaviour, to re-engage with learning and to gain qualifications that set them up well for adult life.
  • Staff understand why pupils behave the way they do. They gain pupil's trust and skilfully help them learn to control and manage their behaviours.
  • Leaders and staff make sure that pupils are able to develop resilience and ability to keep themselves safe.
