Official opening event for Occupational Therapy suite!

3rd November 2017

A proud celebration at West Kirby School & College!

West Kirby School & College officially opened their new Occupational Therapy suite with an official visit from The Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Ann Mclachan and a sense of a real celebration!

The event was well supported by guests from local authorities, business community, autism related support groups and working partners. Two ex-pupils local musician Cal Ruddy and performing artist Jack Evans made inspirational performances at the event, illustrating how pupils at the school have made successful transitions to the working world.

Iain Sim welcomed guests providing an overview of the ethos behind the school and celebrating the importance of the Occupational Therapy within the school. Presentations followed by staff members to give a further insight into the school, Chris Saunders - Enterprise and DT, Helen Shallcross - Transitions Officer and Carol Atkinson - Occupational Therapy.

Madam Mayor made a personal speech and cut the ribbon to officially open the Occupational Therapy suite. She commented “As well as providing a holistic, integrated and personalised approach, the school sets up children with skills for life and independence, evidenced through the range of courses and extra-curricular activities. It’s no mistake West Kirby School & College is rated Oftsted Outstanding and shortlisted for the (Tes) Time Educational Supplement Award for 2017 Specialist Provision.”

Carol Atkinson, WKS Head of Occupational Therapy, followed with an interactive session in the OT room for the guests. She gave a fascinating insight into how the equipment and activities benefit the young people in the school, helping to develop motor and sensory skills which are essential foundations for learning.

Parent, Lorraine Young, and Brand Manager of Chewigem also supported the school on the day, with her daughter participating in the event, talking to guests. Mrs Young commented “The OT suite is incredible and and I know how much it helps my daughter!”
