MFL – German and Mandarin Chinese

Overview

In Primary the pupils have the opportunity to learn Chinese songs and rhymes and learn about the Chinese culture. Visit Mandarin to find out more.

From Key Stage 3, students are introduced to German. By the end of Year 9 students can choose whether they would like to study more depth for GCSE or Functional Skills. German is taught in an interactive and communicative manner with students being encouraged to be independent and analytical thinkers.

Key Stage 1 & 2 (Primary)

In addition to providing stimulating language lessons, the Chinese department offers pupils a wide range of opportunities to improve their language skills and experience in Chinese culture. This includes trips such as Liverpool Chinatown.

The course focuses on all four linguistic skills at a beginners level. Cultural elements are also embedded in the programme: students are given or choose their own Chinese name, learn about Chinese festivals, making Chinese food in the school kitchen and utilising traditional skills such as paper cutting and Chinese calligraphy.

Key Stage 3 (Year 7-9)

Every year, all groups study translation, dictation, speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through a series of topics relevant to real life. By the end of Key Stage 3, students will be prepared with basic linguistic skills to move on to GCSE or Functional Skills.

Key Stage 4 (Year 10-11)

In Key stage 4, pupils have the opportunity to take GCSE or Foundation Course (FCSE) German and Chinese. Visit Chinese to find out more.

The department prepares students for these final exams with regular exam practice and opportunities to develop key language skills, such as translation and dictation with accurate use of grammar and a wide range of application of vocabulary.

Qualification: GCSE German or FCSE German (Foundation Certificate of Secondary Education in German.)
