Pupil Premium

At West Kirby School we are determined that all children will achieve and thrive during their time at the school. Pupil Premium funding is used to provide focused support and pastoral care to children that require it so that they are able to achieve their full potential.

What is the Pupil Premium?

The pupil premium is extra funding given to schools in England and targeted at disadvantaged pupils to help raise their attainment levels.

Who is eligible to claim the Pupil Premium?

Those pupils who have been registered for Free School Meals (FSM) at any point during the last six years and pupils who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, commonly known as Looked After Children or CLA.

All details on the school's use of Pupil Premium are recorded in detail and kept in school.

How do we monitor the effectiveness of the Pupil Premium?

We understand that successful use of the funds requires a clear outcome and knowing how that outcome will be measured. The schools’ assessment monitoring system is used to track the progress of those pupils who claim the Pupil Premium and is used to identify if progress is being made or whether more intervention or different intervention is required.

Staff have created bespoke documents to make clear what the intervention is, what targets have been set, what timeframe has been created to work within and what a successful intervention would result in.

We have robust methods of monitoring the intervention, with staff expected to show the nature of the work completed and if progress is being made.  Staff are expected to complete a summative assessment of the intervention after six weeks, which will show if the intervention is currently successful and inform the decision on whether to continue with it or to cease and consider implementing an alternative and hopefully a more successful practice.  Examples of these can be seen on our website.

What effect has the Pupil Premium had on helping pupils?

We believe that through a robust process, Pupil Premium makes a positive impact on the lives of the pupils that receive it.  This can mean to helping pupils to get the grade they were aiming for in GCSEs, helping to develop skills in order to allow pupils to sit their GCSEs, to helping pupils develop friendships with other pupils that will foster a sense of belonging to the school which will have a long lasting effect.
